How to read this
- sourced numbers come from published industry counts (links below). estimate numbers are my own rough estimates from general industry knowledge. Treat them as order of magnitude, not exact.
- Counts overlap. Many companies sell several services (a remodeler also paints, a plumber also does water heaters), so don't add the rows up. Counts also change a lot depending on whether solo operators with no employees are included.
- Ticket sizes are typical US ranges per job. For recurring services (lawn care, pool, cleaning, pest, studios, retainers) the range is per visit or per month and the sort uses a typical year. Sorting by ticket uses a blended midpoint, so it is approximate.
- Some sourced counts cover a wider group than the niche itself (all dental offices, all martial arts studios, all hair salons, all insurance agencies). Treat those as an upper bound for the niche.
- Mobile detailing, car wash, PPF and ceramic coating are not counted separately by industry sources. The detailing and car wash rows share one IBISWorld group, and the PPF and ceramic coating counts are my guesses. Crane rental and dumpster rental are listed in other categories.
- Many IBISWorld counts (home care, day care, commercial cleaning, photography, home builders, property management, mental health) include solo operators, so they run far higher than counts of staffed companies. The orthodontist count looks low to me and may undercount offices.
- Recurring? is my own judgment of whether the same customer normally pays again on a regular cycle. Recurring means a membership, contract, subscription or scheduled visits (lawn care, gyms, dental implant check-ups every six months, MSP retainers). Sometimes means repeat business is common but not on a fixed cycle (HVAC tune-ups, septic pumping every few years, handyman callbacks). One-time means a project the customer rarely buys again soon (roofing, remodels, funeral services). Real businesses vary, so treat it as a guide, not a rule.
- Prices vary by region and by year. Check a few local competitors before relying on a figure.
